When I was reading up on the latest social media news that has hit the web I came across this new start-up company called "HearSay Social." At first I thought it was yet another social network that was trying to set itself apart from all the other ones that are striving for stardom. Instead this was a sidekick for companies looking to utilize Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to market themselves. According to Tomio Geron of Forbes blog.com HearSay has helped raise 18 million dollars for local social media management. What hearsay does according to Geron is they help companies such as State Farm who are global local based organizations. For example there are many state farm insurance agents in every city or town around the country. Hearsay provides tools for national media managers to pass on to local media mangers for state farm. The whole point of Hearsay Social is to cut down on the amount of time it takes for media managers to check the content that is posted by users visiting their various social network outlets such as twitter and facebook. No one has enough time to go down every minute of every hour scouring for negative and outlandish remarks that can diminish the companies reputation in a heartbeat.
I think this is a good and bad idea. Yes we should be allowed to have the ability to micro manage what is left on our social media websites. However there is one thing to filter and there is another to censor information. Perhaps there is true information that someone wanted to be a watch dog for the good of the public. Following the outcry the company eliminates the source by simply deleting the comment. Is that fair to the general public who help keep these companies alive? I don't think many people would find this to be fair at all. Now say someone is being a "troll"(When I say troll I am referring to someone who constantly is posting false and misleading information to sabotage a companies reputation) and they are filtered out due to false information. This is the only concern I have for Hearsay as it will do great things for companies that want to clean out any of this terrible misleading information.
I look forward to hearing more about this new start-up company and I hope they take this in the direction I think they should. Until next time take care everyone.

Facebook the most hated social network?!
When I saw this headline on Inc.com an online magazine website, I was not surprised, but I was definitely curious as to why. The reason I was not surprised was due to a few factors that I have noticed over the last year or so. The first being that Facebook has been on the decline over the past year. People are getting older and perhaps tired of the everyday in your face advertising that Facebook presents. Another reason is the amount of other social networks that are booming right now and have been on the steady upward swing. Foursquare just hit 10 million users this past week and do you know what they do when they hit a milestone? They update and improve on their already well established network. They reward the users in many ways on Foursquare by utilizing the specials perk on the iphone when users are at different venues that participate in the social network. Another reason I think facebook is the most hated is because of the drama it causes. Everyone knows what everyone is doing regardless if they are friends with them. Now I know there are privacy settings, but word of mouth paired with word on facebook is very strong combination. Many businesses are looking at our facebooks to make a final decision on the new hire in for their company.
Now how in the world can the most popular social network be the most hated. Easy the more people the more complaints you get. Everyone knows someone that is using facebook. Not everyone knows what foursquare is, or linkedin. To support that arguement I bring in Wikipedia, everyone uses that and its free of advertisements, however everyone knows what wikipedia is. Many people do not consider it to be a social network. Wikipedia scored higher than facebook on the customer satisfaction scale done by the American Customer Satisfaction Index.
All in all facebook has set the tone for all the social networks to follow. All Google+ is a boiled down version of facebook without all the games and side shows that draw advertisers to facebook. I think this report is just a swipe at facebook to kick them while perhaps another competitor is arising as we speak. Google+ is quickly hitting milestones of members left and right and from the history of google they are pretty good with building from the ground up.

The Caylee Anthony Case and the social media response
As many of you know this case regarding the late little Caylee Anthony and her mother Casey Anthony has finally concluded after two years. After rigorous debates and countless searches for new evidence and information she was found not guilty. My opinion has no mind in this matter, however the people around the world spoke their minds through various social media platforms.
Many people expressed there distaste for the results and even celebrities made their voices heard. Those celebs included Carson Daly, Kim Kardashian, and Ashton Kutcher. The one I want to focus on the most is Kardashian. As you may be aware, her father was one of the lawyers for O.J. Simpson and we all know how his case turned out. She posted on twitter in response to the Casey Anthony decision by saying "What??????!!!! CASEY ANTHONY FOUND NOT GUILTY!!!!! I am speechless!!!!." Let that sink in for a few seconds and take a deep breath. Yes it is a totally different case, but many people through different walks of life whether its on facebook or not are comparing this to the O.J. case. I definitely see the resemblance.
This brings up a very interesting observation and thought I had while pondering this statement by Kardashian. What if twitter existed when the Simpson case was going on. Now he was very popular athlete don't get me wrong. If he wasnt well known as Anthony was before this whole ordeal, would twitter have impacted this case. I feel the jury may have been bombarded with this case for two years thanks to various media outlets including social media. It would interesting to see the effect social media has on the world when it comes to making a case nationally known or just letting it ride with all the other horrible crimes that go on without notice or attention.
Many people feel that the media was responsible for swaying the case in a particular way without their being adequate evidence to even go along with the accusations. I find this to be very true after watching the countless talk shows that would go on and on about this case over the past two years. Most notably the "Nancy Grace" show, as Grace rose to an all time high in popularity thanks to this case. She would go on nightly about different conspiracies and findings. As I watched this I though it was very money driven as all news is. However this case was extremely big in the U.S. and I feel that she was just utilizing this case to make a name for herself and her show.
For more on this case and the media response check out the article that spurred my very own response I posted here tonight.

Soccer USA vs Mexico
Last night the Gold Cup final of USA vs. Mexico in soccer took place in Pasadena, CA . I had the chance to watch the game in its entirety and it was a good game overall. However there a few things I had a problem with regarding last nights game.
1. Why was the game not on any major networks on extended basic cable (73 channels) according to comcast in most areas?
We always question as to why soccer is not a prominent sporting event here in the states. This is a prime example of why it hasn't reached a revolution in the game of soccer. If the Spanish channel (Univision) is the only network covering the game there is definitely a problem. I understand there are other events that were previously contracted to take place. However it was the Gold Cup final and two rivals were playing each other.
2. Why was there not any buzz on ESPN about this game until roughly two days before the actual game?
The only major events that were taking place all last weekend and this weekend were Wimbeldon (Tennis), the NBA draft, and the NHL draft. If I missed any other noteworthy events to others I am sorry. My point is that there is no reason that our national team our pride and joy should receive no attention. Now the Womens world cup has begun and I doubt the audience will not even reach half the size in which the Mens world cup saw a year ago.
3. I wish the World Cup was not every 4 years but every two years instead.
Now I know this has been the tradition for years. Other countries worship the game of Futbol, Football, or as we call here in America "Soccer." Two of our major sport leagues are facing potential lockout situations and then there is soccer. The MLS our nations pro soccer league is looked down upon compared to very strong leagues in England and Spain. Our nations players go overseas to play soccer there because it is the main sport of choice to watch over there. I bet if the game was popular here a lot more of our players would stay here to put on their game for our Country to watch.
To sum everything up the U.S. lost 4-2 and now our country will yet again just throw U.S. soccer to the curb for another 2 1/2 years until the next world cup in 2014. I am anxious to watch our team grow and hopefully supporters will rise up for the next world cup and continue to stand behind our nations team good or bad. Sure we don't have the "best players," but soccer is a game of strategy that needs heart and dedication. Brazil 2014 here we come and I can't wait for a whole knew display of one of the most majestic games in the world.

Social Media in Sports
Over the past few years Twitter has become a very influential part of not just the everyday Joe, but for athletes as well. Names such as Shaq, Lance Armstrong, and Lebron James are just a few that have implemented the 140 character bird themed social network. Now most of you are familiar with twitter and its format. It is short and sweet and very often a single tweet can pack a long lasting message. NBA athletes have been told not to tweet during a game and up to one hour after the game is over. The reason being is because of the various media outlets that cover these events utilize the time after the game to ask questions and build a story for the news outlets to present. There have been numerous incidents where players did not follow suit and were fined thousands of dollars for not following the guidelines of their respective sports social media policies.
Now after stating some of the previous involvements of athletes and twitter I want to briefly mention an article I came across this weekend. Dana White is the president of UFC also know as MMA or mixed martial arts. In USA today he talks about how social media has really helped UFC really become more involved with its fans and supporters. He is avid believer that is in his best interest to stay up to date with any potential mishaps or complaints from fans than he can easily resolve with the click of a button on his blackberry. UFC's facebook page has the second highest number of friends next to the NBA. That is phenemonal if you think about how mainstream these other sports are. Now soccer as a whole probably tops all of these, but as for the leagues by themselves UFC is number 2.
Now Dana White also offers incentives to his fighters for being media savvy. Bonuses as much as $280,000 dollars if they gain the most followers or create a nifty campaign through twitter or facebook. Stuff like that will not only make their athletes more likeable and accessible, it allows UFC to thrive while supporting their athletes. Now my next question is are their actual everyday businesses that would add incentives to their employees if they were to use twitter to better improve the comapanys outlook to its consumers. Perhaps next week I will scour the internet to see if the less flashy companies offer flashy rewards for taking part in social media.

Social Media To Hire or Not To Hire
I came across a blog that responded to another blog post that recently caught a lot of attention last week. In an article written by Peter Shankman, a Social Media Entrepreneur writes "that he will never hire a social media expert and neither will you." When I hear that heading I am a bit baffled as to why a man who probably considers himself to be a social media guru or expert would say such a thing. Now for the interesting part, if you actually read the article he defends his statement perfectly. Perhaps he entitled this particular article the way he did to get a bit of a reaction to those reading over their RSS feeds or to get other people involved in the discussion.
The term "Social Media Expert" in itself really can be demeaning. Anyone can really say they are a social media expert. The thing that Shankman goes into detail is that just because you can put .com or have 1,000 followers has no indication you have any real skill set that would be different from anyone else in the business. From that statement I feel he is right on queue. When I say that I mean there has to be a purpose for tweeting or posting on facebook. If you are posting for the sake of posting all the time consumers will not pay any interest. They will feel like they are being force fed information. I mean take a look at TV. One of the sole purposes that Tivo was ever created was to eliminate the commercials.
Shankman does not count out Social Media as pointless, which he really can't because he calls himself a social media entrepreneur and CEO. He just clarifies that it takes more than just being a user and posting stuff everyday to say that you know what it takes to have a social media realm succeed.
The three things he mentions as important keys to Social Media success are:
(This is just brief condensed summaries of what Shankman wrote, Go to the Link at the bottom for more information)
Brevity-Many of the people on Twitter can not write to save their lives. 140 characters is perfect for most people because that way they have an excuse to not worry about grammar and fluid sentences
Relevance- I mentioned earlier above about not posting every time a deal or new policy arises
Transparency-You have to be straight forward with your customers. Shankman makes the comment "You can't just use Twitter to get a sufficient apology across, that just isnt going to cut it." Many companies loose focus of customer service and when they do that have no idea to handle crisis without causing more chaos.
Knowing Your Customers-Tweeting back consumers is not enough. Before technology exists rolodex's were a big tool in networking. They were full of addresses and in any given day a businessman could call 10 people up and introduce himself and get his name out their as a personal first name basis. Today its short and sweet and that is not going to close any deals. Being personable always helps and Twitter is somewhere were that should carry over as well.

The semester is coming to an end. I have yet to have the chance to sit back and reflect on the outcome of my first semester here at the big white house. So far I like where I am heading. My focus is very clear and I know what I want to do.
The only thing is having the time to get situated while still going to school. It is very tough to sit down work on resume and cover letters for job opportunities.
For Comm 180 it was a great class by going into detail on all aspects of media. I thought the professor did a great job covering all angles and even brought in guest speakers. It was a very well structured class and I thought that their was numerous chances to boost a grade here and there. Especially with the online quizzes on some assigned readings.
I am looking forward to next semester and hopefully the next goes as smoothly as this one did.
I also though the T.A's did a decent job with what they were required to do.
Since attending this class I have really started to focus more on media techniques and approaches they use to draw our attention. I also pay more attention to how I get my music lately and hopefully I can stay away from illegal downloads. The Tiger Woods scandal has taught me that our generation is getting more and more personal and privacy is becoming non existing.
I enjoyed this class thoroughly and I posted as much as I had time for and it was kind of neat to blog about my time through this class.
I tried to cover in class stuff and then relate to outside personal stories.
thanks,
