As many of you know this case regarding the late little Caylee Anthony and her mother Casey Anthony has finally concluded after two years. After rigorous debates and countless searches for new evidence and information she was found not guilty. My opinion has no mind in this matter, however the people around the world spoke their minds through various social media platforms.
Many people expressed there distaste for the results and even celebrities made their voices heard. Those celebs included Carson Daly, Kim Kardashian, and Ashton Kutcher. The one I want to focus on the most is Kardashian. As you may be aware, her father was one of the lawyers for O.J. Simpson and we all know how his case turned out. She posted on twitter in response to the Casey Anthony decision by saying "What??????!!!! CASEY ANTHONY FOUND NOT GUILTY!!!!! I am speechless!!!!." Let that sink in for a few seconds and take a deep breath. Yes it is a totally different case, but many people through different walks of life whether its on facebook or not are comparing this to the O.J. case. I definitely see the resemblance.
This brings up a very interesting observation and thought I had while pondering this statement by Kardashian. What if twitter existed when the Simpson case was going on. Now he was very popular athlete don't get me wrong. If he wasnt well known as Anthony was before this whole ordeal, would twitter have impacted this case. I feel the jury may have been bombarded with this case for two years thanks to various media outlets including social media. It would interesting to see the effect social media has on the world when it comes to making a case nationally known or just letting it ride with all the other horrible crimes that go on without notice or attention.
Many people feel that the media was responsible for swaying the case in a particular way without their being adequate evidence to even go along with the accusations. I find this to be very true after watching the countless talk shows that would go on and on about this case over the past two years. Most notably the "Nancy Grace" show, as Grace rose to an all time high in popularity thanks to this case. She would go on nightly about different conspiracies and findings. As I watched this I though it was very money driven as all news is. However this case was extremely big in the U.S. and I feel that she was just utilizing this case to make a name for herself and her show.
For more on this case and the media response check out the article that spurred my very own response I posted here tonight.
Examiner and Casey Anthony
Due to the social media's growth and the change in the way we communicate, we utilize these websites to create opinions and let it be heard by the general public. Everyone who had a comment to make on the Casey Anthony trial and verdict made comments via Facebook & Twitter knowing they had a "voice" using social media. Although many feel social media websites had something to do with the final verdict, I feel that is bogus. If anything, the social media bashed Casey Anthony and many who posted comments were enraged throughout the whole case.
ReplyDeleteI think that social media allows people everywhere to fell like they are being heard. Most of us like to voice our opinions when we feel something unfair is going on and even when nothing is going on. Through social media, a lot of people showed their uproar at the verdict because they didn't believe it to be fair and needed a way to express their frustration. I do think that social media can help sway the people in the case, the jury especially; however, I am sure that they get protected from most of it and are not allowed to be in touch with social media while the trial is going on. In this particular case, I believe that if anything, social media was going against Casey Anthony and if they swayed people, they swayed it against her. I really liked that you used an example like the one of O.J. Simpson to demonstrate your point. though I don't believe that Kim Kardashian had anything to do with her father's work, I do agree with you when you said that the jury would have been harassed after the trial for a long time. Social media has opened the door for a lot of positive things but this always comes with a lot of negative repercussions as well.
